Marat Daukayev Artistic Director
Marat Daukayev is a former star of the Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg, Russia. He was renowned among St. Petersburg audiences for the purity of his style and the depth of his dramatic interpretation. Mr. Daukayev received his professional training at the Vaganova and Perm Ballet Schools. In 1972 he won the Bronze Medal at the International Ballet Competition in Varna. He was invited to join the Kirov Ballet as a soloist in 1973 and was soon promoted to principal dancer. During his 20-year career, Mr. Daukayev danced the starring male role in the complete repertoire of classic ballets. He partnered three generations of leading ballerinas. In 1977 he received the Russian State Award for his artistic achievement, and in 1983 he was named People's Artist—the highest honor bestowed by the Russian State. Mr. Daukayev starred in numerous international ballet tours and in films and television including Anyuta, Cinderella, Pavlova, and The Magic of the Kirov. From 1992 to 1997 he was teacher and coach to principal dancers of the Kirov Ballet.
In 1998, Mr. Daukayev joined the Colorado Ballet as ballet master. The ballets he set for the company, which included Sleeping Beauty and Giselle, were hailed as the embodiment of the great Russian tradition. Since 2001, Mr. Daukayev has directed the Marat Daukayev School of Ballet and the Marat Daukayev Ballet Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Mr. Daukayev and his wife, Pamela, have three children.
